Traffic safety is a condition that is achieved when road users feel safe, and the risk of injuries and fatalities in road traffic is no greater than the level of risk that must be accepted when compared with similar situations in other parts of society. In other words, the degree to which traffic safety is achieved in a community depends on what level of accidents and insecurity society is willing to tolerate.
But no one wants to feel unsafe in traffic. And we cannot afford to lose anyone!
Traffic safety work in Norway is based on a vision that there should be no accidents with fatalities or serious injuries in road traffic – the Vision Zero principle.
When you think about traffic safety, you may also think about injury prevention. You want to act in a way that ensures you do not harm yourself, others, or your vehicle. This might make you reflect on what you associate with risk – perhaps a near miss that luckily ended well, or maybe a serious accident you were involved in or witnessed.
If you reflect on all the situations you have experienced that could have been dangerous, you will probably also think about your own and others’ actions and attitudes. By doing so, you test your own thoughts and values, and develop greater insight and understanding.
This traffic safety course is designed to help you understand what causes accidents and what you can do to prevent them.
